Welcome to our website!

DAG-Des Moines started when Donna Moore and Donna Marc discussed Dress A Girl. Finding that none existed in this area, they decided to start a group at their apartment building. They got patterns from Dress A Girl Around the World website.  They put enough money together to purchase fabric, thread, bias tape, etc. to start making dresses. On February 29, 2016, they held their first meeting. Since the start, our groups have made and collected dresses from seamstresses all over Iowa. To date, we have sent out over 9,000 dresses to 16 countries. You don’t need to know how to sew. Many of our members cut dresses, check dresses for quality, size, and pack dresses for their destination. Come join us!

One Step at a Time

Dress A Girl desires to provide each girl around the world with a dress, a sense of self-worth, giving her DIGNITY, providing education on basic HEALTH and hygiene,  LOVE as missionaries place her new dress over her head and bring her JOY as she dances around with a smile. EVERY LITTLE GIRL DESERVES AT LEAST ONE NEW DRESS!

Reinforcing our Commitment

Covid 19 has temporarily canceled all missionary trips across the world.  Recently we have been able to give a gentleman from Des Moines dresses for his orphanage in Ghana. We have continued to make dresses,  giving over 1,125 dresses to Operation Christmas Child just this year. This is a Christian organization run by Samaritan’s Purse. They send shoeboxes filled with fun and necessary items to children. To date, we have provided local OCC groups with over 4,000 dresses.  Hopefully, missionaries will be traveling again so we can continue our mission, getting our dresses to girls all over the world.

Helping The Community

With this initiative, our goal is to promote great opportunities for those in need. With access to the right resources, people can become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. Learn more about our work by getting in touch with our team today.

The History of our dresses

The first Dress a Girl dress was made of a pillow case by our founder, Rachel, who was on a mission trip with her brother. After this trip seeing how happy the girls were, she decided to gather with some others and make more, this grew into what it is today. The dresses have evolved so much since, they need to be made of a sturdy cotton with a zig-zagged or French seam. Each needs to have one or two large pockets that can hold anything each girl desires. Our label needs to be prominent on each dress, typically at the bottom corner of a pocket, but always on the front. We have been told by missionaries that these labels help keep the girls safe from predators. We make sundresses as well as many other styles, some with sleeves, because some countries require girls to have their shoulders covered. Each dress must go over the girls head with no buttons or zippers because they make them more prone to damage. Any pattern can be used as long as it is appropriate and fits Dress a Girl standards.

NOT FOR PROFIT 501-C3

In 2016 our organization was know as Dress A Girl.  On July 1, 2019 we became our own 501-c3 organization, making us Dress A Girl Des Moines. That made it possible to accept contribution directly, thus allowing us to maintain our own bank account.
